The Big Cold Turkey Programme Foundation
Welcome to The Big Cold Turkey Foundation. This Foundation has been part of the concept for The Big Cold Turkey Programme right from the very beginning - we set it up to help support young people who are at risk of suffering – either from their own addictions, or from the addictions of those close to them. The foundation also initiates and supports other projects designed to increase the opportunities available to underprivileged children in the UK. Our original idea was to give 10% of The Big Cold Turkey Programme profits to the Foundation, but we have since decided to donate all The Big Cold Turkey Programme revenue. From our point of view if The Big Cold Turkey Programme can help people give up a serious addiction or bad habit and help young people along way, then it will be worth every penny. We're very proud of the way the Foundation has been created – with no outside funding or handouts from the government. The money we’re raising is now coming from all of you who’ve bought and continue to buy the Big Cold Turkey packs, and from those of you who have raised money by using our ‘42 day Cold Turkey Programme marathon sponsorship forms', (downloaded from our website). We use the money from the Foundation in a number of different ways. Our philosophy is to provide ‘hope’. We believe that nothing is possible without hope and we also believe that with hope everything is possible. We want to give people something to hang on to, to give them something to aspire to, to show them that life can be different, to give them something to look forward to. The projects The Big Cold Turkey Foundation sponsors come from a variety of sources, but we insist on being involved at ground level. That way we get to see the results of our efforts. We don’t have strict criteria for choosing the sort of projects we take on; if we see a need or are alerted to a need, we look to see how we might be able to help. The type of work we have been involved in to date is detailed below: We might work with individuals who’ve kicked a habit but find themselves lonely, after the initial rush of succeeding. All the people they used to hang out with are people they now need to avoid. By continuing to support them and by getting them involved in something new - perhaps by encouraging them to help or support others - that person may find a new sense of fulfilment and direction for their future. Lee (a father of two) was such a person. We might organise and finance a holiday for a family who’ve never been on holiday – perhaps because they are struggling financially because one or both parents are absent (physically or mentally) because of an addiction. The Butler family have just been on holiday to Lyme Regis – organised and funded by The Big Cold Turkey Foundation. We might work with a local school to motivate youngsters into thinking about the dangers of addiction and to encourage them into trying to give something up. Kingsmead school is local to the offices of The Big Cold Turkey Foundation. It’s a small comprehensive school located in an area with many social problems. |
Case history No: 1 Kingsmead School | | | Cheltenham Kingsmead is a small comprehensive school in an area of Cheltenham that has many social problems. For the last three years Cheltenham YFC youth workers have been working to support both students and staff in the school. The Big Cold Turkey Foundation helped the youth workers with one of their aims to increase the amount of respect shown by students to each other and to staff. In November 2005 a six-week “Respect” course for students was trialled. | | | YFC Youth leader Paul Bennett | This course sought to encourage students to develop a greater sense of self-respect as well as consider how they could respect other people involved in their lives. All students and group leaders on the course agreed to do The Big Cold Turkey Programme as a way of developing self-respect. The Foundation provided Big Cold Turkey packs and the posters, which were placed around the school asking for volunteers willing to give up a habit or addiction for 42 days. We suggested a variety of things that could be given up ranging from smoking, drugs, truancy, biting nails, being on school report, over eating and not eating enough. Twelve students came forward and asked to join a group to help them with their particular addiction or habit. The youth workers encouraged the young people to consider that if they could gain control over one habit or addiction they could take control of other areas of their lives that they wanted to change. At the end of the course five students and staff had completed 42 days with another five people still continuing. (During the course some people gave in to their habit or addiction but they were encouraged to start again. The definition of failure was not giving in to temptation but not trying again). We might support a local charity whose work is synonymous with our philosophy of giving hope. Family Space is a charity local to The Big Cold Turkey Foundation offices. Family Space supports families in disadvantaged areas. | Case history No: 2 Family Space
| Family Space supports families in disadvantaged areas. For these families life (due to a variety of reasons) can be a constant struggle with little relief or hope. Family space provides an opportunity for parents and children to spend quality time with each other, on their own or with their peers. Family Space aims to give parents the time and space to develop, nurture and enjoy relationships with their children. The hope is that as one family relates to another and/or to Family Space staff, families will gain the confidence and skills to better cope with the stresses and strains of family life. To date The Big Cold Turkey Foundation has sponsored the development of a branding system to help Family Space present themselves to potential financial supporters. The Big Cold Turkey has also sponsored the time donated by individuals to assist in the implementation of the fundraising strategy and general administration.
